Dr Selam and his partner, Dr Van are committed to the research protocols full-time, and directly involved in the performing and documentation of study visits. They are supported by a team of 4-8 study coordinators, a budget and regulatory manager, and a dedicated clinical trials recruiter. An electrophysiologist with more than 20 years experience in neuropathy studies is also available as needed.
Clinical Trial Investigators (www.ct-investigators.com), a parent company of the Diabetes Research Center, both located in the same building and run by Dr. Van and Dr. Selam, is dedicated to performing clinical trials in specialties other than diabetes (arthritis, asthma, obesity...).
Dr Selam received his undergraduate education and medical doctorate in France, University of Montpellier. He is a specialist in internal medicine and endocrinology in France since 1979 and is licensed in California since 1987. He has worked as an associate professor at University of California Irvine Diabetes Research Program 1986-90 then as an associate professor at University Medical School of Paris, dept of Diabetology 1990-2003. He has been appointed in 2005 as Visiting Professor by the USC School of Medicine, Los Angeles.
Dr. Selam joined the Diabetes Research Center in Tustin California ( dba University Clinical Investigators Inc ) in 2003 which he became CEO in 2006 . The Diabetes Research Center has performed over 200 phase 1-4 diabetic studies, the majority in the fields of insulin, oral medications, neuropathy and obesity. Dr Selam is the author of 116 peer-reviewed publications, 128 invited articles or chapters in books, and 354 conference presentations, the majority in the field of new techniques of insulin therapy including intensive insulin and implantable insulin pumps, which he is considered as a world leader. He also has performed pioneer work on intraperitoneal insulin and insulin-induced remissions. He is the Editor in Chief of the Journals Infusystems, which he founded in 1983, a world leading journal in the field of insulin delivery systems. Dr Selam has maintained direct clinical responsibility of diabetic patients in France as well as in his current position in the US.
Dr Van received her undergraduate degree from University of California, San Diego in Biological Sciences. During and after her undergraduate education she authored and co-authored numerous research publications in the field of Diabetes Medicine. After working in the industry she returned to pursue medical school and completed her residency training in Family Medicine at Arrowhead County Regional Medical Center (a UCI Affiliate Program). Upon graduation, she began working at St Jude Heritage Medical Group. During her tenure with St Jude, Dr Van was nominated as one of Orange County’s Physicians of Excellence by Orange Coast Magazine (January 2013 issue).
Since 2007, Dr Van has served as a consultant for the Diabetes Research Center. She has been the primary and sub-investigator for multiple diabetes studies. As a result of her contributions, Dr Van has become a vital addition to the Diabetes Research Center’s team. She is currently a principal investigator for several large studies and now dedicates herself solely to clinical research. She admits that her job satisfaction comes primarily from her passion for her patient’s well-being and her personal commitment to providing quality research.
